Twelve original parts in original wrappers, now housed in a cloth drop down box. Thirty-seven tissue guarded mounted albumen prints (three to each part and a small one to title page), generally c. 230mm x 165mm in size (or vice versa), each with an explanatory text leaf.

All parts lacking backstrips and effectively disbound, a few wrappers lightly dust stained, a couple torn but with no loss, upper wrapper to Part 12 soiled, lower wrapper with greasy soiling. Small tear to head of text leaf to 'Jerusalem From Mount of Olives', first mount with light water staining to outer edge, one or two of the images lightly faded, but generally good strong images.

The first part of Frith's four part work, originally published in two volumes in 1859, which was followed by a third volume in 1860.

This is the second enlarged edition, and is preferred as the prints "are of a much stronger quality than those in the first edition having been gold-toned" (Gernsheim, 'Incunabula of British Photographic Literature 1839-1875', page 38). Gernsheim 195; and see Chahine 1745 and Parr / Badger I:28
