Three volumes complete - 'The Fellowship of the Ring', 1954, 423pp, [1]; 'The Two Towers', 1954, 352pp and 'The Return of the King', 1955, 416pp. Rebound in full morocco, raised bands, spines in six panels, morocco title label to second panel, author label to fourth, date to foot in gilt, covers bordered with single gilt fillet, upper covers with central ring and eye device in gilt, a.e.g., new endpapers.

Externally very good indeed. Internally bright and clean, except for a small patch of colour bleed from the original cloth onto the bottom margin of the final page of the 'Return of the King', with an associated small hole to bottom margin. Each volume with a folding map tipped on to rear endpaper. With a tipped in, slightly smudged, signature of Tolkien's to front pastedown of volume one. First edition set, but later state, Hammond and Anderson initially had this as the first state (page 86), but apparently have revised this opinion since. Now housed in a cloth slipcase, made by Temple Bookbinders.
