[7], viii-xxix, [2], 2-268pp. Contemporary half calf and cloth, raised bands, spine in six panels, leather title label to second panel, gilt double rules to either side of bands, gilt pallet to bands. Calf rubbed with a few scuffs, small repair to head of upper joint, but holding well, Internally the text has the usual browning and foxing, mainly to edges, former owner's gift inscription to half title. Described by McLean as "one of the oddest and most beautiful books of the whole century" (McLean, VBD, page 70). Each proposition has a wood engraved initial by Mary Byfield, and is set in italic, the "rest of the page is a unique riot of red, yellow, and blue: on some pages letters and numbers only are printed in colour, sprinkled over the page like tiny wild flowers, demanding the most meticulous register: elsewhere, solid squares, triangles, and circles are printed in gaudy and theatrical colours, attaining a verve not seen again on book pages till the days of Dufy, Matisse and Derain" (Ibid).
