Later half calf and marbled paper over boards, bound from the parts, semi-raised bands, spine in six panels, title label to second panel, author label to third, remaining panels gilt with volute corner pieces, small fleuron to centre and small roundels to top, bottom and sides, all edges marbled, marbled endpapers. Spine slightly faded, rubbed to extremities.
Slightly browned internally, plates often oxidised to edges with some minor foxing, but generally better than often found. With frontispiece, additional vignette title and thirty-eight plates, including ten 'dark' plates by Phiz.
The first edition, bound from the parts with the stab holes often visible, with the typographical errors and the five line errata. (see Smith pages 81-84)
