[001494] Var, F. Rylstone; [Knowles-Foster, Frances G.] The Witch of Knaresbro'. An Historical Romance. ill. Evans, Bernard. Ripon and London: William Harrison & Son and Simpkin, Marshall, Hamilton, Kent & Co., 1921. Second Edition. 12mo. Hardback. Very Good. [5], 2-156pp. Chivers binding in full morocco, smooth spine with author and title in gilt, upper cover with single line border, thick and thin line frame surrounding a stylised floral frame containing a hand-painted panel showing the witch, with the title hand-painted beneath, lower cover with the single line border and thick and thin line frame only, gilt roll to edges and inner edges, a.e.g., with watered silk endpapers and pastedowns

Boards very slightly splayed, hint of foxing to edges of text block and title, very occasional spot here and there, but generally fairly bright and clean

Frontispiece of Knaresboro' Castle after Bernard Evans and four other tissue-guarded plates (one slightly adhered to bottom corner and torn). Manuscript 'author's note' bound in after title with hand-drawn seal, noting that she was only a teenager when this novel was first published in 1904, and that she now feels able to use her own name, rather than her pseudonym. Bookplate of Mary, Princess Royal and Countess of Harewood to front pastedown

An attractive example of a Chivers binding, likely to be unique
