iv, [1], 2-554pp, [2]. Original quarter holland and blue paper over boards, original paper label to spine. Spine label browned and slightly chipped, light spotting to back strip and edges, two small holes in holland to upper joint, covers lightly discoloured and marked. Internally a few small spots to first page of text, a tiny piece missing from bottom margin of Dd5, otherwise quite bright and clean. Now housed in a vellum backed drop back box, made by Temple Bookbinders. Text printed double column in Chaucer type, with titles in Troy type. With an engraved title, fourteen foliate borders, eighteen different frames, and twenty-six initial words designed by Morris (and engraved by C.E. Keates, Hooper, and W. Spielmayer), and eighty-seven wood-engraved illustrations engraved by William Harcourt Hooper after drawings by Robert Catterson-Smith from designs by Edward Burne-Jones. One of four hundred and twenty-five copies printed on paper (with at least fifteen copies on vellum - see Peterson's 'The Kelmscott Chaucer - A Census'). An attractive copy of probably the finest private press book ever produced, Franklin notes that "the Chaucer gained a name as the finest book since Gutenberg" (Franklin, 'The Private Presses', page 43).
